Increasing,
decreasing and constant functions |
A
function f is increasing
in an interval if x1 < x2
implies f(x1) < f(x2) for
every x1,x2
in the interval. The graph of an increasing function "goes up" when x
increases. A function f is decreasing in an interval if x1 < x2 implies f(x1) > f(x2) for every x1, x2 in the interval. The graph of a decreasing function "goes down" when x increases. A function f is constant in an interval if f(x1) = f(x2) for every x1, x2 in the interval. The graph of a constant function is horizontal. |
