Maximum and minimum |
Let f be a function. There is a global or absolute maximum (pl. maxima) of f in x=x0 if f(x0) is the greatest value of f(x). It is a local or relative maximum if it is the greatest value in an interval. There is a global or absolute minimum (pl. minima) of f in x=x0 if f(x0) is the smallest value of f(x). It is a local or relative minimum if it is the smallest value in an interval. An extremum (pl. extrema) is a minimum or maximun |
Activity 6: Use the point P to find the maximum of the function whose graph you have on the right. Is it an absolute maximum? |
Activity 7: Use the point P to find the minimum of the function whose graph you have on the right. Is it an absolute minimum? |
Activity 8: Use the point P to find the extrema of the function whose graph you have on the right. Is any of them an absolute extremum? |
