Burn victims often turn to plastic surgery in a variety of ways, to change the look, color and texture of their wounds. As technology continues to improve more options are becoming available. Today, there are four common procedures that benefit patients suffering the affects of a burn.

Skin Grafts:

When skin is removed from a burn victim, a skin graft can provide a replacement. Skin from another area is removed and transplanted to the place of the burn. Plastic surgery ensures that the new skin attaches smoothly and closes the wound from the donor site. The donor area is typically skin that is covered up by clothing.

During the procedure, different parts of the skin can be removed. Sometimes, it is necessary to remove all of the layers of the dermis (skin) and other times only some of the top layers are necessary. This skin is attached using stiches and a special protection is set up around it to prevent infection as the skin grows together. Recovery time depends on the type of procedure, the area affected, and the ability to the skin to reattach to its new location.

Microsurgery:

Skin isn't the only thing that can be reattached to the body. Unfortunately, burn victims can lose limbs in the midst of their trauma. If this is the case, plastic surgery can help attach those limbs back to the body. From ears to lips and even a finger or toe, the microsurgery uses a microscope to ensure that each everything, including arteries or and nerves are reconnected.

Free Flap Procedure:

Breast augmentations are one of the most common forms of plastic surgery that use the free flap procedure. Instead of just transferring skin to a new location, the surgeon moves the blood supply, bone, and muscle. Because of everything involved with the procedure, recovery can take several weeks or even stretch into months. It requires extensive care to make sure the wound site heals.

Tissue Expansion:

With a little help from tissue expansion, the body is able to grow new skin. A balloon expander is inserted underneath the skin. Over time, the balloon is filled with fluid and the skin begins to stretch out. Once enough skin is created, a plastic surgery procedure uses the skin to cover up a portion of the body that has been damaged. Many people opt for this treatment because it often provides a more aesthetically pleasing look. It comes from the person's own body, so it matches his or her skin type and the attachment leaves less scarring. すそワキガ
