Eczema, or dermatitis, is an inflammatory rash that is red, swollen, and blistered, or scaly and itchy. It has affected millions over the world. Unfortunately, there is no cure for eczema but we can definitely do something to manage it. This article suggests some home remedies for eczema that you can use.
1. Control dust mites at home
Waste matter from house dust mites can be an eczema trigger for some people. Studies have suggested that lowering the number of dust mites is one of the home remedies for eczema as it helps to reduce eczema symptoms. Here are a few ways of keeping your home dust mite free:
- Maintain cleanliness
Clean rooms thoroughly every week. Wipe the floors, furniture, window sills and door tops with a damp cloth to remove dust.
- Bedding blitz
Dust mites thrive in your bedding. To reduce the numbers, pull back the bedclothes every morning and air the bed for at least an hour with your windows open. Wash sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases once a week and buy those that are mite-resistant. Vacuum the mattress before replacing the bedding. Wash duvets and pillows frequently.
- Keep your rooms airy
Dust mites like damp and warm conditions. To keep them at bay, ensure that your home's humidity level stays between 45 and 55 per cent. Use a hygrometer to check level of moisture in the air and open your windows every day to reduce humidity.
2. Control temperature
Controlling temperature is one of the easy-to-apply home remedies for eczema. Extreme heat or cold can aggravate certain forms of eczema, especially atopic eczema. So, dress appropriately, preferably in cotton clothing which does not cause the skin to itch. Keep your bedroom fairly cool, at a temperature not exceeding 16C.
3. Wear gloves
Your skin will come into contact when you are washing dishes, etc and wearing gloves is one of the home remedies for eczema you can apply. Wearing rubber gloves will shield the skin on your hands. Replace rubber gloves with cotton ones if you are allergic to latex. Also, put on gloves if you are heading outdoors in the cold weather.
4. Use natural products for cleaning
Chemical-based household cleaners can trigger eczema symptoms. Instead of using products laden with chemicals, opt for eco-friendly cleaners based on natural ingredients like vinegar and lemon, which are among the natural home remedies for eczema.
- Lemon
Lemon contains citric acid and has bleaching, antibacterial and de-greasing qualities. Use half a lemon to clean the bath and wash basins. Lemon can be used as a natural bleach to brighten clothing and bed linen. Soak the clothing and bed linen in a bucket of water juiced with lemon overnight before washing. Lemon also acts as a deodorizer. Placing a few slices of lemon in the fridge helps in keeping the fridge fresh.
- White vinegar
White vinegar doesn't smell and is the best type to be used in your home. Add a little vinegar to water and use it to clean tiles and kitchen worktops. Vinegar also makes a great window cleaner. Use a cup of that in a litre of warm water. Simply spray onto your window and then remove and buff with crumpled newspapers to prevent streaking.
