2010 Detroit Lions Predictions

The Detroit Lions go into the 2010 season off another miserable season where they managed to win just two games, even so the future is beginning to seem a great deal brighter for the franchise that hasn't been to your playoffs since 1999, and hasn't experienced a winning season since 2000. The Lions happen to be very active this offseason adding several players that may get this amazing effect on this team turning things for this season. Here's a glimpse at what are the Lions may be like in 2010, plus my prediction on where they finish the year in the NFC North.

Offense: It appears that the Lions made the appropriate call when taking quarterback Matthew Stafford with all the first overall pick from the 2009 NFL draft, as Stafford showed a great deal of positive signs within his first season to be a starter. However Stafford must find methods to stay healthy after playing in mere 10 games in '09, and should be capable of cut down on his 20 interceptions he created last season.

The Detroit Lions finished this year's season ranked 24th in rushing, plus the Lions responded by trading back into the first round to pick out Cal running back Jahvid Best, who can likely start for that injured Kevin smith. Best is surely an explosive runner that gives the Lions an activity take off the backfield.

At wide receiver the Lions have one of several top young talents in all of football in Calvin Johnson, but the problem has become we have seen not a soul to take coverage far from him in the three seasons using the Lions. The Lions hope that newly acquired Nate Burleson are able to do exactly that. The Lions traded for tight end Tony Scheffler this offseason, and today have two very talented tight ends with Brandon Pettigrew coming off a reasonably solid rookie season.

The offensive line is a problem with the Lions through the years, but there is a possibility that this unit can take some big strides this season. The Lions added left guard Rob Sims in a trade with the Seahawks, and then he figures to start out instantly near to left tackle Jeff Backus. The Lions need right tackle Gosder Cherilus to demonstrate some improvements this year, while he did not fulfill his first round selection in 2008.

Defense: The Lions made some major upgrades within the defensive line this offseason. It started with the free agent pickup of defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, who is still an elite pass rusher heading into his 10th season. Jason Hunter and Cliff Avril are definitely the two top candidates for that other starting end spot. With all the No.2 pick inside 2010 draft the Lions selected defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, and then there are huge expectations for that rookie this season, of course, if he plays well, he'll almost certainly make everyone around him better.

At linebacker the Lions lost 2009 starters Ernie Sims and Larry Foote, leaving outside linebacker Julian Peterson as the only starter back from 2009. Second year pro DeAndre Levy got some action at middle linebacker last season, and is the frontrunner to start on opening day, while Zach Follett generally seems to have the edge on the other outside spot.

From the secondary the Detroit Lions Football designed a do business with the Falcons for starting corner Chris Houston and the man would have been a big part within the Lions attempt to improve on the worst pass defense in '09. One other starting corner job comes to an end for grabs in training camp, with Erik King, Jonathan Wade, Dante Wesley and rookie Amari Spievey all fighting to do the job. Louis Delmas has returned at free safety, plus the team is hoping strong safety Ko Simpson will be ready to go once the season begins.
