Phosphorescence is the luminescence produced by a mineral during a more or less long period of time, after the source of exciting radiation has ceased.
Zinc sulphide and determined calcites are examples of phosphorescent minerals.

The position of the hands and the numbers on a watch or clock can be seen in the dark because they are covered with a phosphorescent substance.
