Soddy and Fajans stated the laws of transmutation which govern the process by which one element transmutes into another (this is what the alchemists dreamt of achieving).

The following equation expresses the relationship among the elements and particles which intervene in b emission.

Soddy's 2nd law: When a radioactive atom emits a beta particle, its atomic number increases by one unit.

How is this explained?

The cause of the b emission is that, in the nucleus, a neutron is transformed into a proton and an electron.

The nucleus only emits the electron (b particle) which is formed. During the emission of the beta particle both the quantity of movement and the energy is conserved.
