1 a . The litre.

The capacity of a container is known as the volume of the liquid or gas that it can hold.
Capacity and volume are equivalent. Establishing a special unit to measure volume isn't necessary, so using the cubic metre would have been enough, but for practical use the litre was established as a unit.
The litre is the capacity of a cubic decimetre.

If we make a cube shaped box that is a decimetre long, wide and high, then the box holds a litre.

You can rotate this cubic decimetre by moving the red dot.
In order to measure it with the ruler you have to make sure it faces you.

You can move the rulers from their ends, one after the other.

1 b . Multiples and submultiples of the litre.

The complete series of volume units is formed in the same way as the length units.

The symbol of the litre is the letter l, the remaining symbols are the ones shown in this table, you should write them as they appear here, with no capital letters, without a dot and without adding -s, even when they are used in plural.
