The  base unit of area is the square metre.
The square metre is the area of a square whose sides measure exactly one metre.


1 b . Multiples and submultiples of the square metre.

You have to bear in mind that area units are squares. The conversion of a unit into another one is done by dividing or multiplying both the length and the width, that is dividing and multiplying by ten twice; in other words, dividing and multiplying by 100.
