MONOMIALS AND POLYNOMIALS

INTRODUCTION

This unit focuses on algebraic expressions in general and then specifically on monomials and polynomials. We take a close look at operations with monomials and polynomials, particularly at the division of polynomials by the binomial (x - a), Ruffini's rule and factorizing polynomials.

AIMS

To recognise algebraic expressions and their numerical value.
To study properties and operations with monomials.
To recognise polynomials in one variable (letter) and understand some basic operations
To introduce the remainder theorem and Ruffini's rule
To learn how to break a polynomial down into simple factors (factorise)
